How we compile these figures

Every number on this site is derived from published manufacturer specifications by a repeatable process. This page describes that process, including the parts of it that fail.

Where the data comes from

We collect EV charger listings from major retail catalogues and extract each specification the manufacturer publishes — output amperage, voltage, power, cable length, connector type, install method, weight and dimensions. Nothing is measured by us, and nothing is estimated.

Normalising units

Manufacturers state the same quantity in different units, sometimes within one listing. Power appears as kilowatts in a title and as watts in a specification table. Cable length appears in feet and metres. Everything is converted to a single internal unit before comparison, and converted back for display.

This step is where the most damaging errors live, because a missing conversion does not look like an error — it looks like a number. The clearest case in this corpus was power: the field carried no declared unit, so a listing saying “9.6 kW” stored 9.6 and a specification table saying “9600 Watts” stored 9600 — the same charger, the same column, a factor of a thousand apart. Both now resolve to watts, and kilowatts are derived.

Cleaning the corpus

Search results for EV chargers are mostly not EV chargers. From the raw set we removed:

  • 66 adapters, extension cords, splitters and cable holders. These are the hard case, and the reason this section exists. An adapter publishes an amperage, a voltage and a connector exactly as a charger does, so leaving them in does not produce an obviously broken corpus — it produces a category median that quietly describes a bag of adapters.
  • 6 products that are not chargers at all — portable power stations, generators, RV cords and cable protectors.

The rule that separates them is that the first comma-delimited segment names the product. “Level 2 EV Charger, 32A, NEMA 14-50P Adapter” is a charger that ships with an adapter; “Tesla to J1772 Adapter, 60A” is an adapter. Matching the word “adapter” anywhere removed real chargers; requiring a charger phrase anywhere kept real adapters. Only the head segment settles it, and getting that wrong in either direction was worse than either mistake alone.

What we keep even though we cannot classify it

4 chargers publish no install method at all. They are kept: they are real products with a real output, price band and connector, and the finder can place them on every one of those axes. They are absent only from the category pages, which are organised by the one thing those listings do not say.

Where physics rules a figure out

A Level 1 or Level 2 charger draws between 6 and 100 amps and delivers between 1 and 25 kilowatts. Cells outside those ranges are measuring something else — usually a connector’s contact rating rather than the charger’s output. In those cases the cell is discarded and the rest of the listing kept, because discarding the whole product would lose a real charger over one bad figure.

The breaker figure, and exactly what it is

This is the one number on the site that no manufacturer publishes. An EV charger runs at its full output for three hours or more, which makes it a continuous load, and a continuous load may occupy no more than 80% of its circuit — equivalently, the circuit must be rated at least 125% of the load. We divide the published output by 0.8 and round up to the smallest breaker that is actually manufactured.

It is arithmetic on a published rating and nothing more. It does not know whether your panel has the spare capacity, what conductor the run needs, how long that run is, whether a load calculation passes, or what your local amendments require. Every one of those can change the answer, and all of them are an electrician’s job. We publish it because the alternative is that buyers meet the number for the first time in a quote.

How baselines are computed

A baseline is the median of a specification within one group. Groups here are install method, output class and connector — each taken on its own.

That is a departure from how a larger corpus would do it, and the reason is arithmetic. Three install methods by five output classes is fifteen combinations, and this corpus fills almost none of them with enough listings for a median to describe anything. Computing them anyway would produce numbers with the appearance of precision and none of the substance.

Output classes are: up to 16 A, 17 – 32 A, 33 – 40 A, 41 – 48 A, 49 A and above.

A group needs at least 8 listings before a baseline is published. 10 of the 10 groups in this corpus clear that bar.

What we will not publish

  • Star ratings and review counts. Not published in any form, including paraphrase.
  • Exact prices. Prices change daily; a scraped price is misleading by the time it is read.
  • Estimated specifications. Where a manufacturer has not published a figure, the page says not stated.
  • Test results. We do not test, so we have none.
  • Electrical designs. We publish one piece of arithmetic and label it as such. Wire sizing, load calculations and permits are not ours to give.

Known limits

Specification coverage is uneven and this constrains what can be compared. Enclosure ratings, operating temperature range and warranty terms are too sparse across this corpus to support any comparison, so none is offered.

The corpus reflects one retail catalogue at one point in time. It is not the whole market, and chargers sold only through electrical wholesalers are absent. Figures were last computed on 2026-08-27.
